Hello everyone! I have a bit of a dilemma...I can sing almost anything you put in front of me, but I can't write anything! Anyone want to help me out?

Listen to the radio. There's a ton of songwriters out there who can't sing. Find songs that you love and sing them. If they touch you, sing them and make them your own. I won't listen to Bob Dylan, but I'll listen to the Byrds doing Bob Dylan.
Just a few words from someone who has written 4 songs in 55 years, but who can play (and sing) other people's songs for hours. If you've got a voice, you've got all you need.
(p.s. I was a Hoosier too, until moving to oregon about 6 weeks ago!)

Thanks for the advice! I guess I was specifically hoping to find someone out there who can write, but was looking for someone to sing their stuff, lol. What part of Indiana were you living in?

I was in Lafayette or West Lafayette. I had a jug band called Street Music, played bass with a rock band called Hormones A Go Go featuring the Fabulous Creamettes, and played guitar with a trio called Menage A Trois. I moved to Burns, Oregon to get out of debt (better pay out here) and be closer to my three kids scattered along the west coast. I'm playing cello with the chamber orchestra here, as there doesn't seem to be any music scene at all - not too surprising, with only 7500 people in 18,000 sq. miles. Indiana's definitely a better place to be for music. I know in Lafayette there was a songwriter's group, there must be one or more in Indy. And there are some great songwriters in Indiana - Carrie Newcomer, who got started in Lafayette and now lives in Bloomington, is one (unfortunately, she's one who can actually sing her own songs well). I hope you get some more productive replies to your post, but be patient and persistent in pursuing all avenues - it can be hard to find a songwriter who acknowledges then need for someone with a voice who can put it across. Added note: for pagan ritual/worship, try one of the Unitarian-Universalist churches in Indy - one or more of them probably has a pagan subgroup, and at least you could find some leads. Maybe one even has a CUUPs (the UU Pagan group). There was always a pretty strong pagan presence at the UU church in Lafayette.

What helps me (and it may sound strange, but bear with me) is just simply to write anything at first - just get the pen moving. For me this stream-of-consciousness is very effective at letting me determine what 's foremost in my subconscious. Also have a notebook handy so you can jot down any creative idea you may have. It's much too daunting to try to write a complete piece outright - a more managable starting point is just to simply jot down ideas without trying to define it in anyway. I hope this helps.
