Developing Melodies

how do you go about developing your melodies? and i don't mean the cadence necessarily.. i mean the actual melodies..
the up and down of the notes?
do you have any particular way that you go about doing this?
is their any technique? any mechanics? any inspiration?

Hello! I'm a writer (songwriter and poet) from pittsburgh pa. Me and my writing partner is looking for singers and music producers (people who make music for some of our music. We write songs every week and we are making demos of them. I'm an acomplished and published writer (the author of two books). We've been writing together for many years, have studied music and started a songwriting group (on myspace first) called Slipping Notes & Kickin Back Muzik. We write songs in a variety of categories which include pop, rock, soul, slow-grind and some hip-hop. We particularly have an interesting idea for one of our particularly songs we are collaborating on. We basically are looking for people who we can work with as a team and is going to know what team work is. I do sing but I do not sing professionally and we write songs mostly for other people to sing (from hearing other peoples voices). We work hard and write everyday. We especially need people who can make the music and people who can sing the songs and people who got music that needs songs written for. but that would be a waste of your energy. and money. time too.

so, that's not what i'm going to throw at you, bay area musicians. i respect your effort more than to go and use up your hard earned resouces on half mixed, partially recorded, phased out and quiet little masters.

nope.

i'm giving you the chance to do this like the big guys. i will fight to get you an affordable deal in the most sought after studio in SF. and i don't mean a 10% discount...

oh! but you gotta be worth it.

The "working title" I came up with for the band I'd like to put together is FAR FROM NEAR...Let's get on with things.
Playing since I was 16, and been thru stretches in my life where I've been tempted to GIVE IT UP and SELL my gear. But the older I get, themore I realize how important it is to keep playing. Born and raised in NEw York, and lived there till I was 30. Now, I've been living in Seattle for the last 4 years. I started recording 2 years ago with a bass, guitar, and a Casio keyboard onto a 4-track, and mixing those tapes down onto an Alesis MasterLink...Even though there are times when I sound like my FAVORITE PLAYERS ( A lot of Musicians do that sometimes) I have no doubt that what you will hear on the tracks I made is ME, BEING MYSELF. But what you will hear is actually just a BLUEPRINT of the concepts I want to explore...And I won't be able to ELEVATE this design into something with some REALLY EFFECTIVE until I can put together a group of musicians that are just as interested in making something this forward-thinking as I am. My time is VALUABLE to me, so I refuse to play ANYTHING I DON'T BELIEVE IN, and don't want to deal with anyone but RESPONSIBLE ADULTS. I'm not concerned with getting a deal with a MAJOR LABEL because I believe that with the RIGHT EQUIPMENT, and a GOOD GROUP of INTELLIGENT, RESPONSIBLE people, that we can do this: WE CAN WRITE AND PRODUCE OUR OWN MATERIAL, Create OUR OWN WEBSITE, MARKET OURSELVES, BOOK OUR OWN SHOWS, and out something together that's INDEPENDENT AND SELF-SUSTAINING. There are people out there that enjoy hearing and seeing music that is done this way. The trouble is, there aren't enough people putting together those kinds of groups...taking the kind of chances that fans of this music enjoy, expect and DEMAND from it...Maybe FAR FROM NEAR can change that....

Rromani GYpsy Music

Hi,
I am new and dont exactly know if I will know how to get back,lol, but...
I am of the Rromani Tribe and left my subculture of the Rromania here. I am looking to get with musicians who are interested in learning our music and playing back up for my lyrics and singing. I also play percussion and dance Rromani. I am a slight bit older, 38, but young in physical and I pray, in spirit. I am asked to sing with many local musicians and have been singing and dancing all my life; as all my people do, till we die. I did not get with the music when i was younger in the professional way, but with travel, Kumpania, and parties, so forth. But now that the girls are more grown, I think I could still do it, and there seems to be intrest. I have the handicap of not knowing how to acompany myself, so I have been limited to Gypsy musician backups, or other non Gyspy friends and going accapella, lol. It would be great to gather with thouse who appriciate the styles of our peoples music. I would like to blend the American hip hop, world culture music with the Rromani style, and know how. I can verify all that is said and wish you all many sweet blessings.

Oregon music

Sorry, I should have said southeastern Oregon music. Anybody even remotely nearby who loves to play? I'm electric/classical guitar, electric bass or cello, and need some folks to play with. I don't write much, but do a number of styles and am an inventive bass player at least. I'm great at rhythym guitar, but only occasionally at lead. I can sing in tune. I favor folk-rock type stuff, but also do some relatively heavy rock. Also classical, of course, on cello, but I can play that by ear, too. Have been in a few bands, all local when I was in Indiana. Just moved to Burns, and things are a little too quiet around here.

Commercial writing/producing

We are a three guitar players (early/mid twenties) who have been writing and performing for the past seven years. We have about 12 years experience on our instruments. We are looking for dedicated musicians, who are not primarily focused on “rock stardom”, but who are interested in creating intense and honest music. We have a tendency to stray away from the “AABA” format of most rock/pop tunes. Ultimately, we want (like us all) to play music for a living, however, we would like to play with people who will let their artistic nature drive the music as opposed to outside influences. Some influences include (are not limited to) explosions in the sky, mogwai, tool, radiohead, sigur ros, massive attack, the smashing pumpkins, mum, do make say think, labradford, gybe, and the notwist. Some of the bands have more impact on us than others. Sometimes the entire band is influential and sometimes it is simply there use of harmonies or song structure. What are your opinions about the following:

What type of things do you get your inspiration from?

How long does it normally take you to finish a "project" (whatever that may be)?

Do you think songwriting/music in general had been depreciated by people just rhyming words and calling it a song.

What do you think the standards are for a good song?
(ex: needs to make the listner feel what the writer felt, etc.)

Three of my tunes

By having an embedded web music player on his own web page with some samples of his guitar playing, he could narrow down the selection/auditions/phone calls required to form his new band.

I decided to make it even more useful to both musicians and others, by adding 14 internet radio stations and the ability to play music CDs from the computer CDROM drive.
